Probably Stolen is a first-person shopkeeping sim set in a grimy, neon-soaked cyberpunk alley, and its core loop is deceptively simple: buy questionable goods, haggle with sketchy customers, and try not to get caught selling things that definitely were not yours to sell. Developed by Questing Goose Studio, it sits somewhere between a management sim, a light social-deduction game, and a narrative sandbox. You run a cramped storefront, stock shelves, set prices, and read the room as couriers, gang members, and undercover cops wander in. It is the kind of game that appeals to players who enjoy Papers, Please-style tension, cozy shop sims, and a bit of roleplay. What caught my eye was a short trailer full of flickering holograms and a customer haggling over a clearly engraved corporate prototype. The vibe was instantly memorable, so I installed it expecting a quirky curiosity and ended up losing a weekend.
The first hour is rough in an endearing way. Controls are straightforward, though inventory management takes a while to click because you are constantly sorting junk from actual valuables. Performance held steady on my mid-range PC, with only minor stutter when the alley outside filled with rain effects. The learning curve is mostly social: you learn to watch for nervous body language and suspiciously specific questions. One standout moment came when a regular customer asked for a "completely legal" data drive, then a uniformed officer walked in seconds later. I panicked, shoved the drive into a drawer, and pretended to dust the counter. The officer bought a cheap battery and left. That tiny improvised lie felt better than any scripted reveal. The level design does a lot with one small shop, using lighting, radio chatter, and shifting clientele to keep the space feeling alive. The UI is serviceable rather than elegant, but the progression system, which unlocks new stock sources and back-room upgrades, kept pulling me forward. A few accessibility and difficulty toggles, like haggling assists and longer police patrol windows, made the experience easier to tune when I wanted a calmer session.
Compared with other shop sims I have played, Probably Stolen feels less about optimizing profit and more about reading people. It lacks the polish of bigger management titles, and its stealth and disguise mechanics are shallower than a full immersive sim. Yet I kept playing because the moment-to-moment decisions are more rewarding than the loop in many similar games. The haggling system gives you real levers, the risk of selling hot merchandise creates genuine tension, and the community is small but active, sharing price guides and ridiculous customer stories. It does not reinvent the genre, but it stands out through atmosphere and nerve. If you want a polished tycoon game, look elsewhere. If you want a scruffy cyberpunk shop where every sale could be a mistake, this one earns its place.
features
- Haggle and read the room 🎭 - Every customer has tells, and pricing is a negotiation rather than a menu choice, so each sale becomes a tiny performance.
- Hot goods pipeline 🔥 - The game constantly tempts you with stolen stock, and the risk-reward loop of moving illegal items before patrols arrive gives the sim its edge.
- One-shop atmosphere 🌧️ - Rain, neon, radio static, and a rotating cast of shady regulars make a single cramped storefront feel bigger than it is.
- Upgrade the back room 🛠️ - Progression unlocks new suppliers, storage, and counter tools that meaningfully change how you play rather than just adding numbers.
pros
- Memorable social tension 🕵️ - The best moments come from improvising under pressure, like hiding contraband while a cop browses, and those stories stick with you.
- Approachable but deep enough 📈 - It is easy to start selling junk, but learning customer types, timing, and risk management adds real texture over time.
- Strong sense of place 🏙️ - The art direction and sound design sell the cyberpunk fantasy without needing a huge open world.
- Fair progression ⚖️ - Upgrades feel earned through play, not purchased, and the difficulty toggles respect different play styles.
cons
- Clunky inventory sorting 🎒 - Managing stock gets tedious fast, especially when you are rushing to hide something before a patrol enters.
- Shallow stealth systems 🥷 - The disguise and hiding mechanics are fun ideas but lack the depth of a dedicated stealth game.
- Uneven polish 🧩 - Some UI elements and customer animations feel placeholder-ish, which can break immersion during tense moments.
- Narrow long-term goals 🎯 - Once you learn the patterns, the loop can lose steam, and the narrative hooks do not always carry you through the mid-game slump.
