Enshrouded is a survival-crafting action RPG set in a sprawling, voxel-based fantasy world that has been swallowed by a deadly fog called the Shroud. You play as a Flameborn, one of the last survivors of a ruined civilization, tasked with rekindling the Flame and pushing back the mist. The core loop revolves around exploring, gathering resources, building bases, crafting gear, and clearing enemy camps, all while managing a hunger and stamina system that keeps you on your toes. It sits comfortably in the same territory as Valheim and Palworld, but leans harder into RPG progression and handcrafted world design. I first noticed it during its early access launch, mostly because the trailer showed a surprising amount of verticality and a building system that looked genuinely flexible. Survival fans, base-builders, and anyone who enjoys a bit of dungeon-crawling with friends will find plenty to sink their teeth into.
My first few hours were a slow burn. The controls are responsive, though the inventory management takes some getting used to, and the skill tree doesn't really open up until you've leveled a bit. Performance was solid on my mid-range PC, with only occasional frame dips when the Shroud effects fill the screen. The standout moment came when I first descended into a Shroud-covered zone with a timer ticking down, scrambling to loot a chest before the mist closed in. That tension is where the game shines. The building system is remarkably forgiving, letting you carve out a cliffside fortress without fighting the geometry, and the UI, while dense, becomes second nature after a while. Progression feels earned rather than grindy, and the variety of biomes kept me curious about what lay beyond the next ridge.
Compared to Valheim, Enshrouded feels more guided and story-driven, with NPCs and quests that give your wandering a purpose. It doesn't have the same brutal difficulty spikes, which made it easier for me to keep playing without feeling punished. The building tools are smoother than most of its peers, and the lack of aggressive monetization is refreshing. What kept me coming back was the sense that every expedition mattered, whether I was hunting for a new crafting recipe or just expanding my base. It doesn't reinvent the genre, but it polishes the familiar formula in ways that feel thoughtful and player-friendly. If you've bounced off harsher survival games, this one might be the gentle push you need.
features
- Seamless voxel building 🧱 — You can dig, place, and reshape terrain freely, and the snap-to-grid options make complex structures surprisingly easy to assemble.
- Shroud exploration timer ⏳ — Venturing into the fog adds a real sense of risk, forcing you to plan routes and manage your time instead of wandering aimlessly.
- Class-free skill tree 🌳 — You mix and match abilities from different archetypes, so you can build a battlemage or a ranger-tank without being locked into a single path.
- Quest-driven NPCs 🧑🌾 — Rescuing craftsmen and settlers gives your base a lived-in feel and unlocks new recipes, turning your camp into a small community.
pros
- Flexible building that respects your time 🏗️ — The terrain manipulation and forgiving placement mean you spend more time creating and less time wrestling with controls.
- Rewarding exploration 🗺️ — Every cave and ruin feels hand-placed, with loot that actually matters and secrets that encourage a second look.
- Co-op that just works 👥 — Jumping into a friend's world is painless, and shared progression means nobody feels like a passenger.
- No pay-to-win nonsense 💸 — It's a complete package with no aggressive microtransactions, which is increasingly rare and genuinely appreciated.
cons
- Inventory clutter 🎒 — The sheer number of materials and gear pieces can overwhelm you, and the sorting tools are functional but not elegant.
- Combat lacks bite ⚔️ — Enemy AI can be predictable, and melee feedback doesn't quite land with the weight you'd expect from an action RPG.
- Story takes a backseat 📖 — The lore is interesting but delivered in fragments, so players who want a strong narrative might feel left wanting.
